Mead and Wenches Does Make it Folk Metal Folk Metal has been around sense the 1990's. The earliest band that created this genre of music had to be Skyclad. They had an offshoot of heavy metal that included folkish instruments and folk singing. In the early years this genre has began to grow as more newcomers and bands start to fall into this category. In Europe there is a lot of tradition, tales, stories and history that goes along with folk metal. This region is where most folk bands get their ideas and metal music songs inspiration from. Romanticism and pagan beliefs are some of the more popular structures of folk metal music. There is also some other styles of folk metal or subgenres of folk metal, Oriental metal, Celtic metal and Viking metal. The band Cruachan arguably started the Celtic metal genre when the guitarist expressed interest in fusing traditional black metal with the folk music of Ireland. Some other bands that are responsible for folk metal are Primordial and Waylander. Orphaned Land started making Arabic and Jewish style of folk music. This brought some media attention to the folk metal community in the early 90's. This style of music was from the Middle East, it became known as Oriental metal. Viking metal, which incorporates anything from flutes to hurdy-gurdys, clean chanting vocals to death-metal growls was pioneered by the Swedish band Bathory in the early 90's. This made Bathory style the standard for all Viking metal. Always with a healthy dose of Nordic paganism and mythology, Viking metal's lyrics are often powerful ballads to a forgotten time. Amon Amarth has taken death metal and Viking metal and combined them into their own unique style. Ensiferium have the bars set high for Viking metal. They are one of the most popular and defined Viking metal bands in the genre today. Masculinity and Nationalism are prideful in Folk metal. There are a few bands that label themselves part of the NSBM or Nationalism Socialism Black Metal. These are usually not very popular or accepted by the metal community. This has made problems for lots of bands that have had to publicly denounce racism and other controversial topics. Folk metal really grabs a hold of their fans with different festivals and concerts focused on pleasing their fans. Heathen Fest, Notably Paganfest and Noctis Valkyries Metal Festival. As time goes on and the genre expands these tours and festivals have made their way from the cold northern lands from whence they came across the sea to the States. Although folk metal has been penned by some as a 'passing fad', this 'fad' has its roots in years of hard work and dedication. Some will appreciate the style of the music and the powers of each generation of musicians have passed on. Folk metal is for some a musical staple and for other casual metal listeners a welcome break from the monotony of breakdowns and chugs all too prevalent in today's 'scene'. The Beginning of Thrash Metal Thrash metal is another genre of the metal music community. Metal with fast drum beats, guitar riffs and aggressive vocals is known as thrash metal. Having loud singing and distortion with lots of bass have been know in thrash metal. Most of this music was brought up by "The Big Four." The four bands that fit into this group are Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer. These four bands are the fathers of thrash metal and began their journey in the 1970's and early 80's. At the late 1970's and early 1980's, there was a huge wave of British metal music bands was circling. Giving a hardcore metal or punk rock a more extreme vocal and a faster beat gives you the foundation of thrash metal music. This introduced a more distortion guitar, complex riffs, long guitar solos, double kick bass drums and loud vocals. Most thrash metal songs played long introductions, high speed complex solos and long endings. These bands used a technique called shredding when playing their solos. Sweep picking, tremolo, phrasing, tapping, pull-offs and hammer-ons are some techniques musicians would use while shredding. For the metal community and having these new styles being played was a great movement for the typical styles. Thrash metal broke open in 1984 when Metallica's "Ride the Lighting" , Anthrax's "Fistful of Metal" , Overkill's "Self Titled" and Slayer's "Haunting the Chapel" was released. All of these different bands brought something new to trash metal, usually competing in making the heaviest and fastest music. Thrash Metal was on the rise after this, the metal community had brought it in and it started to grow. Into the 1990's there was a change in the style of music and how the bands kept on releasing albums. The same bands were still rocking the thrash metal and were releasing very successful albums, but the style had alternated. With Metallica new albums "Load" and "Reload" released, the thrash metal they were know for turned into a heavy metal or hard rock. Not only did Metallica take a different route with their music, so did Megadeth. Megadeth's album "Countdown to Extinction" was a different style than their earlier releases. With thrash metal become more and more unpopular, is it time for a comeback? Gama Bomb, Municipal Waste and Evile are some bands that are still pumping out the thrash metal. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax still release new albums and still tour around the world, just a little different than what they were in the 70's and 80's. Thrash metal will always be a recognizable metal genre because of what it changed in music. The fast riffs, solos and techniques used in thrash metal are being used today in all metal genres. With the genre being overloaded with new bands, this resulted in bad quality of music. In the beginning of the year 2000, nu metal's popularity started to decline and bands that started the revolution started to see a drop in sales to their new released albums. With nu metal slowing down, the metal community moved on to the next generation of metal music which is a pop / emo punk. Nu metal is still are and still quite popular. Some bands have changed their style other still the same. Either way Nu metal will always have that spot in society.
